The issues of Tskhinvali/South Ossetia and Abkhazia were also touched upon in the meeting and Ambassador confirms Japan’s consistent position that peaceful resolution of the conflict in Georgia’s occupied regions in line with the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders is essential for the peace and stability of the country and the entire South Caucasus region. Expressing deep concern that a Georgian citizen, Dr. Vazha Gaprindashvili was detained by “authorities in South Ossetia” on November 9 and “sentenced” to 1 year and 9 months in prison on December 20, Ambassador stated that Japan calls for immediate release of Dr. Gaprindashvili to return him to his family.
