Japan has consistently supported the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders on the issue of Georgia's occupied regions of Tskhinvali/South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Based on this position, Japan does not recognize the so-called "presidential election" in Tskhinvali/South Ossetia held on September 18 as legitimate.
Japan opposes any attempt to change Georgia's internationally recognized borders.
