Opening of the Exhibition "Yakishime" at the Sighnaghi National Museum (28 September – 16 October 2026)

2026/9/29

On 28 September, Ambassador Hideki Ishizuka delivered his remarks at the opening ceremony of the exhibition "Yakishime – Earth Metamorphosis" co-organized by the Embassy of Japan in Georgia, the Japan Foundation, Sighnaghi Municipality, the Georgian National Museum and the Sighnaghi National Museum.

Yakishime, one of the most historically elemental methods of ceramic production of Japan, is fired at high temperatures without glaze – a technique that has been passed down uninterrupted since the 4th and 5th centuries.  Yakishime began to flourish almost in the current style in the late 12th century and had become highly revered in the world of tea ceramics by the 16th century. In modern era, contemporary artists have embraced the technique to create decorative objects, firmly establishing it as a distinct mode of artistic expression in modern Japanese art.

This exhibition traces the evolution of Yakishime from its origins to the present day. Featuring a diverse range of works – including tea utensils, everyday table ware and modern ceramic sculptures – the exhibition offers visitors a unique window into this enduring aspect of Japan’s traditional culture.
