On October 15, the Ambassador of Japan to Georgia, H.E Mr. Ishizuka Hideki attended the opening ceremony of two exhibitions of famous Japanese photographers, “PROVOKE(D): A New Language of Japanese Photography” and “Sand Dune”, which marked the start of Tbilisi Photo Festival 2026 held at the Tbilisi Photography & Multimedia Museum.

These exhibitions are organised as central events of the Tbilisi Photo Festival 2026, by the Tbilisi Photography & Multimedia Museum, the Photography & Multimedia Center and the Tbilisi Photo Festival, in collaboration with the long-established collotype studio “Benrido Atelier of Kyoto” with the support of the Embassy of Japan in Georgia and the Japan Foundation.

The exhibitions are  the first large-scale presentation of the Japanese masters of Avant Garde photography in Georgia. The works are crafted using the Japanese collotype prints techniques provided by Benrido Atelier, one of the few studios in the world that has preserved this technique today.

In his speech, Ambassador Ishizuka expressed his sincere gratitude to the organisers and to Benrido Atelier. He also highlighted the significance of introducing Japanese collotype technique to Georgian specialists which will contribute to transmit technical mastery and artistic appeal of collotype printing to future generations. Furthermore, he wished that the exhibitions would serve as a bridge of mutual understanding between the people of Japan and Georgia.

The exhibitions will be on display until 15 January 2027.
