Statement of the Embassy of Japan in Georgia on the 13th anniversary of the conflict in August 2008

On the 13th anniversary of the outbreak of armed conflict in Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia and Abkhazia in August 2008, the Embassy of Japan expresses its deep condolences to the victims and their relatives of the conflict, and reiterates its consistent position that peaceful resolution of the conflict in these regions in line with the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders is essential for the peace and stability of the country and the entire South Caucasus region.
The embassy is concerned by the humanitarian situation in all conflict-affected areas throughout Georgia and underlines the need for the the full implementation of the resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 16 June 2021 "Status of internally displaced persons and refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia, and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia, Georgia".
Japan opposes any attempts to change the internationally recognized borders of Georgia.
