Statement by the Embassy of Japan in Georgia on the 16th anniversary of the conflict in August 2008

On the 16th anniversary of the outbreak of the armed conflict in Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia and Abkhazia in August 2008, the Embassy of Japan expresses its deepest condolences to the victims of the conflict, and reiterates that Japan opposes any attempts to change Georgia's internationally recognized borders, and consistently supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.
 
 
The Embassy is concerned about the humanitarian situation in all conflict-affected areas throughout Georgia and underlines the need for full implementation of the resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on May 28th 2024 "Status of Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia, and Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia, Georgia".
 
 
Japan will continue to cooperate with Georgia as an important partner in strengthening a free and open international order based on the rule of law.
